Which speed rail did you actually mean?

Search the phrase and most of what comes back is aluminium pipe for film rigging — hollow high-strength tube, most often cited in nominal 1-1/4 inch and 1-1/2 inch sizes, where, as FilmSpeed explains, the number refers to internal diameter and a "1-1/4 inch" tube measures close to 1-5/8 inch on the outside, subject to tolerance. That convention came over from the handrail trade with Hollander fittings. The one-line test: if you're hanging a light, you want pipe sized by diameter; if you're holding a bottle, you want a stainless well sized by length.

For everyone else:

  • For a cramped station where you need 12 bottles but only have 22 inches of frontage to give up, so capacity has to go outward and upward instead of sideways: GRIDMANN 22-inch.
  • For a single-station home bar or a short gap beside a sink where only about a foot of rail will physically fit: AmGood 15.
  • For a visible home or hotel back bar where a mirror-polished rail would clash and you want the rail to disappear against dark cabinetry: Shopping Soda Premium Black.

Checking a manufacturer's bottle count against the pitch

Divide a rail's length by four and you get its nominal bottle count, using the average liquor bottle diameter Cabaret Design Group publishes. Where a listing gives its own figure, that sum is the check on it.

One correction worth making. Cabaret Design Group's own model station reaches 20 bottles using a 36-inch rail plus tiered underbar liquor steps, and the same source caps an efficient station at 10 to 12 feet overall. At the four-inch bottle diameter that source publishes, a 36-inch rail alone would give you nine. The steps do the rest of the work.

The bottles that break the four-inch rule

Cabaret Design Group's figure is an average, and averages do not describe a well loaded with fat or square-shouldered bottles. Because bottles cannot nest, a square bottle occupies more frontage than its base measurement suggests, so a rail loaded with them will hold fewer than the four-inch pitch predicts. No source in the evidence file quantifies that shortfall for any specific bottle or rail.

Nominal versus actual, on the bar side too

Bar rails carry the same nominal-versus-actual gap that film speed rail does. Summit's SpeedRail is sold at a nominal depth of 6.0 inches (15 cm) while its actual depth is 5.33 inches (14 cm); the unit measures 8.0" H x 18.0" W x 5.33" D, weighs 4.0 lbs, and is made of 304 grade stainless steel. That is the only bar rail dimensioned in the sources here, and no page states the length, height, depth or capacity range for bar speed rails as a category.

Where the differences change the build: depth, not length. Cabaret Design Group notes these things usually hang off drainboards, ice bins and three-bin sinks — surfaces that are already eating your reach. Length you can verify with a tape; width and depth you have to take from the listing.

Mounting geometry the listings leave out

A product listing doesn't tell you where on the bar die to put the rail. That's the number that decides whether a full well is workable, and it isn't a product spec at all — it's a bar spec. Cabaret Designers publishes several of the figures manufacturers skip.

  • 12 to 14 inches off the floor for the bottom of the rail, per Cabaret Designers. Higher and the bartender's forearm has to lift on every pour; lower and the pull turns into a stoop.
  • Top of the tallest bottle level with the working surface above it. Same source. That's the real mounting rule, and it means you measure your tallest bottle first, then set the rail — not the reverse.
  • A 24-inch lateral envelope for underbar equipment. Everything the bartender touches without a step should fall inside it, which means any rail longer than that envelope reaches past a single station.
  • Mounting hardware is unresolved. No source in the evidence file states the mounting hardware, bracket spacing, or the clearance a bar speed rail needs behind it.
  • Clearance above a cooler door is the one people get wrong. Summit specifies its 18-inch SpeedRail for doors 24 inches or wider with a door depth of 1-5/16 inches — the rail has to clear the door's swing arc, not just its face.

Short that gap and the door fouls the rail. Cabaret Designers notes rails are typically hung off drainboards, ice bins and 3-bin sinks — all things with lids or doors that move. Check the swing before you drill. Worth reading alongside back bar shelving depth and row layouts, since the two runs compete for the same reach.

  • States capacity explicitly: 8 standard 1-litre bottles in 32" x 4" x 5-3/4"

Where 'buy the longest rail that fits' fails, and who each of these suits

Consider a double-tier rail. Its capacity per foot of frontage beats a single tier, but the projection costs reach: Cabaret Design Group reckons a double rail adds 5 inches to bartender reach and pushes a six-foot bartender into an extra 10 degrees of forward lean. So the trade-off is reach against capacity, though no source quantifies where it breaks even. The alternative is a single-tier run plus a tiered liquor step behind it: Krowne's KR24-12RD holds at least 12 bottles in a 12-inch space, which is where the deep capacity should live.

Why long runs lose to two short ones

Cabaret Design Group also caps underbar equipment inside a 24-inch lateral envelope, and that's the number that kills "buy the longest rail that fits". Past 24 inches of continuous rail, the far end sits outside that envelope. A long single run is therefore only worth it where a second person works the far end.
